Preterit-imperfect acquisition in L2 Spanish writing: Moving beyond lexical aspect

While research on second language (L2) tense-aspect acquisition has flourished, most studies have focused lexical aspect as an explanatory variable (Bardovi-Harlig and Comajoan-Colomé 2020). However, the role of features first (L1) production in L2 Spanish preterit-imperfect never been tested before. Prior found that frequency distinctiveness verb forms corpora L1 English predict learners’ (Wulff et al. 2009). The present study aims to replicate these findings test predictions hypotheses another group learners: English-dominant, instructed learners. Analyses were performed longitudinal data from Corpus Written Heritage Speakers (COWS-L2H; Yamada 2020) cross-sectional Escrito del Español (CEDEL2; Lozano 2021). Results indicate emergent use preterit imperfect.
